Coleford Reading Scheme

Devised by Rachel Axten-Higgs and Sandy Shepard, the Coleford Scheme is a structured guided reading approach, which is based on the Reading Assessment Focuses (AFs) and linked to Assessing Pupil’s Progress (APP).

The principles of the approach are based on:

  • the children having access to a wide range of text types
  • the children becoming confident in talking about books
  • the children answering questions from each of the AFs
  • the texts being a challenge for the children to move their learning forward
  • a whole school approach ensuring continuity of learning for children
  • on-going assessment of the AFs being part of reading sessions
  • the children having a range of reading opportunities both independent and supported (e.g. group reading, follow-up tasks, comprehension…)
  • the children enjoying their reading!

Each of our sets contain six books.  Each level contains a selection of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and plays.
