The skills from reading at a young age ultimately carry on into adulthood. Reading generally helps children to become part of a wider community that connects them with words, culture and imagination. There is overwhelming evidence that literacy has a significant relationship with happiness and success. (NLT 2008)
The aim of The Somerset Fiction Award is to:
- Provide the opportunity for young people of all ages, together with their teachers and parents to enjoy reading together.
- To give young people a local scheme that puts the readers in control.
- To promote discussion amongst young people about their reading.
- To raise the profile of reading in Somerset.
HOW TO TAKE PART
- Each year, during the summer term young people are asked, via their teachers and school librarians, to nominate tiles for the following categories.
- Age 4 –7
- Age 7 – 9
- Age 9 – 13
- Schools are contacted and advised of the theme of the award for the following year.
- During the summer holiday the nominations are collated and a shortlist of three titles in each category is published in September and reading commences! Titles are available to borrow or buy from Resources for Learning. Do get in touch!
- Voting takes place during March. This gives plenty of time for the titles in each category to be read and digested. It avoids clashing with exams and other book awards.
- Each young person has one vote, which they can cast to nominate their favourite title.
Please send votes to Karen Horsfield at Resources for Learning, Parkway, Bridgwater. TA6 4RL or
